Estimated weight:
Used for estimating fabrication weight, transport and material costs.
This calculator provides an approximate weight only. Actual sheet weight may vary slightly depending on grade, alloy, finish and manufacturing tolerance.
How the Sheet Metal Weight Calculator Works
The calculator multiplies length × width × thickness × density to estimate the weight of your selected sheet size. It is useful for working out the approximate weight of both full sheets and custom cut pieces before ordering, transporting or fabricating sheet metal.
Because different metals have different densities, the same sheet size can vary significantly in weight. For example, aluminium is much lighter than brass or copper, while mild steel and stainless steel are heavier than many non-ferrous sheet metals.
Example Sheet Weight Calculation
A sheet measuring 1000mm × 500mm × 1mm aluminium weighs approximately 1.35 kg. The same size in brass, copper or steel would weigh considerably more due to the higher density of those materials.
Common Sheet Size Weight Guide
The table below gives a quick guide to the approximate weight of some common sheet sizes at 1mm thickness.
| Sheet Size | Aluminium (1mm) | Brass (1mm) | Copper (1mm) | Stainless Steel (1mm) | Mild Steel (1mm) |
| 1000 × 500 mm | 1.35 kg | 4.25 kg | 4.48 kg | 4.00 kg | 3.93 kg |
| 1000 × 1000 mm | 2.70 kg | 8.50 kg | 8.96 kg | 8.00 kg | 7.85 kg |
| 2000 × 1000 mm | 5.40 kg | 17.00 kg | 17.92 kg | 16.00 kg | 15.70 kg |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate sheet metal weight?
Sheet metal weight is estimated by multiplying the sheet length, width and thickness by the density of the chosen metal. This calculator performs that calculation automatically using standard density values for common sheet metals.
Can I use this calculator for custom sheet sizes?
Yes. This tool is designed for custom dimensions as well as full sheets. Simply enter your required length, width, thickness and material to estimate the weight.
Which metals can I calculate here?
You can estimate the approximate weight of aluminium, brass, copper, stainless steel, zinc and mild steel sheet using the calculator above.
Is the calculated weight exact?
No. The result is an approximate guide based on standard density values. Actual sheet weight can vary slightly depending on alloy, finish and manufacturing tolerance.
Where can I compare standard kg/m² values?
For standard weight-per-square-metre reference values by material and thickness, see our sheet metal weight chart.
