Calculate Sheet Metal Weight

Weight updates automatically as dimensions are entered.

Estimated weight:
1.35 kg
1000mm × 500mm × 1mm aluminium sheet
This calculator provides an approximate weight only. Actual weights may vary slightly depending on grade, finish and manufacturing tolerances.

Example Calculation

A sheet measuring 1000mm × 500mm × 1mm aluminium weighs approximately 1.35 kg. Heavier materials such as brass or copper will weigh significantly more for the same sheet size due to their higher density.

Sheet Metal Weight Formula

The weight of sheet metal can be calculated using the following formula:

Length × Width × Thickness × Density = Weight

Length, width and thickness must be converted to metres for the selected metal, and density in kg/m³ for the selected metal. The calculator above performs this automatically for common sheet metals.

How Sheet Metal Weight Is Calculated

The weight of sheet metal depends on the sheet size, thickness and the density of the material. Different metals have different densities, meaning sheets of identical size can vary significantly in weight.

For example, brass and copper are much heavier than aluminium, while stainless steel and mild steel also weigh more per square metre than most non-ferrous sheet metals.

This is why calculating weight before ordering can be useful when planning fabrication, installation, handling or transport.

Weight Calculator for Different Sheet Metals

The sheet metal weight calculator above can be used for a wide range of metals commonly used in fabrication, craft and engineering. Simply select the material and enter your sheet dimensions to estimate the weight.

Aluminium Sheet Weight Calculator

Aluminium sheet is lightweight compared with most other metals, with a typical density of around 2700 kg/m³. This makes it popular for fabrication, signage, panels and transport applications where strength is required but weight must be kept low. Use the calculator above to estimate the weight of aluminium sheet based on your chosen size and thickness.

Brass Sheet Weight Calculator

Brass sheet is significantly heavier than aluminium due to its higher density of approximately 8500 kg/m³. Brass sheets are commonly used for decorative metalwork, engraving, signage and interior design features. The calculator above allows you to quickly estimate the weight of brass sheet before ordering.

Copper Sheet Weight Calculator

Copper sheet has a density of around 8960 kg/m³, making it one of the heavier non-ferrous sheet metals. Copper is widely used for roofing, splashbacks, craft applications and architectural details. Use the calculator above to estimate copper sheet weight for custom panel sizes.

Steel Sheet Weight Calculator

Steel sheet, including mild steel and stainless steel, typically has a density close to 7850–8000 kg/m³. Steel sheets are widely used in fabrication, engineering and structural applications. Enter your sheet size and thickness in the calculator above to estimate the weight.

Actual weight may vary slightly depending on the exact grade, alloy and manufacturing tolerance of the material supplied.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate sheet metal weight?

Sheet metal weight is calculated by multiplying the sheet length, width and thickness by the density of the metal. Different metals have different densities, which means sheets of the same size can weigh very different amounts. Our sheet metal weight calculator performs this calculation automatically using standard density values.

What does 1 mm steel sheet weigh per square metre?

A 1 mm thick mild steel sheet typically weighs about 7.85 kg per square metre. Stainless steel sheets are slightly heavier at around 8.0 kg per square metre, while aluminium sheets are much lighter at around 2.7 kg per square metre.

Why do different metals weigh different amounts?

Different metals have different densities. Materials such as brass and copper are much denser than aluminium, which means they weigh more for the same sheet size and thickness. This is why calculating sheet metal weight can be useful when planning fabrication, handling or transport.

Can I calculate the weight of sheet metal cut to size?

Yes. The calculator works for both full sheets and custom panel sizes. Simply enter the required sheet dimensions and thickness to estimate the weight before ordering sheet metal cut to size.
