Why Use Heatsinks to Cool Computer Processors

Components disburse heat. Heatsinks disburse it. This must happen in order to maintain a reasonable operating temperature…the hotter a component gets, the less reliable…The temperature directly effects the overall life of the component, computer processor, etc…so this is where heatsinks come into the picture.

The video on this page is titled “Electronics Thermal Heatsink Design Tutorial” and shows how heatsinks work to dissipate heat from electrical components. Heatsinks make use of extended surfaces to lower tempetures. They transfer heat to from a solid medium to one that is liquid…(air, liquid). Heatsinks are commonly made of aluminium alloy or copper. Copper is used due to it having close to twice the conductivity, however, it is also 3 times as heavy, so the application can dictate what is the most suitable metal to use. Even diamonds can be used as heatsinks…as they can dissipate even more heat, for purposes such as cooling laser diodes and very high powered circuits.

The summary is that these intermediary materials and metals can directly effect the overall life of electronic compontents, help them function more effectively and efficiently…greatly extending the life of electrical components…such as computer processors.

I upgraded my laptop (Asus C90S) from a nVidia graphics card (which used to overheat – 80 degrees) to an ATI mobility graphics card
The heatsink wouldn’t touch the GPU so I needed the copper shim to pad out the gap.
The 0.5mm copper shim covers the GPU, I used heat transfer grease on both sides. The aluminium heatsink then bolts on to the card
I tried different pads but anything thicker would raise the heatsink too high away from the RAM chips. And with a thermal pad it was running at about 64 degrees.
This was a successful upgrade as the new graphics card is now running at around 58 degrees. The copper shim transfers heat better than a thermal pad.
Many thanks,
Chris.

There are many polishes that can be applied to stainless steel sheet. Polishing does not just mean treating the metal surface to achieve a shine, it means all degrees of reflectivity from dead matt to super bright.

Super bright is commonly called mirror finish. Metal Sheets stocks super bright but also stocks a special product called “SuperMirror, a much superior product.

The finish refered to as “Brushed Finish” has a trade reference “DP” which means “Dull Polish” . This finish is achieved using grit in the polishing media. Variations in the brush effect are obtained by using grits of different sizes.Metal Sheets normally stocks 240 grit finish.

This finish is polular for domestic and commercial kitchen splashbacks and display equipment.

Circles Finish

The Circles polish is a variation of the Dull Polish which produces overlapping circles. This sheet is often found in the catering trade and mobile trailer kitchens.

It may cost a little more but if it is appearance you are looking for then this is the product.

Metaloffcuts stocks KME copper, it has been used in many refurbishment projects in pubs, clubs, offices and public buildings.

Metaloffcuts also manufactures copper Finger Push Plates which, because of the antibacterial properties of copper, are gaining popularity for use in restaurants, surgeries and hospitals for example to help reduce infections passed by hand.
